Merritt Island and the Astronauts Hall of Fame

Sunday 3rd January 2010

Merritt Island

Today we went for a five mile walk around the nature reserve on Merritt Island. The sun never quiet managed to break through and the cold wind made the cheap woolly hats, purchased yesterday, a very good buy at only 60p each, + tax.

We saw an abundance of wildlife including: Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Grey Herons, White Ibis, White Pelicans, Rosette Spoonbills, Turkey Vultures, Anhingas and Wood stalks.

We watched an Osprey sore down towards the water, disappear behind some bushes and then rise again with a plump fish wriggling in its claws. We even caught a brief glimpse of an otter. Later, after visiting the visitors centre we also saw a lone alligator, something we didn’t expect on such a cold day.

Astronauts Hall of Fame

We finished the day by visiting the Astronauts Hall of Fame. Interesting at first but I did start to get a bit bored quiet quickly as we had heard so much of the same yesterday. But then Paul discovered another section with lots of interactive bits and pieces including a ‘ride’ simulating take off and landing of a fighter jet, with the rider being the pilot. Watching others have their go first, the ride is basically two capsules spinning round and moving position, either lifting or tilting a bit. Actually sitting inside and watching the film on the screen – I was going to say was realistic, but as I have never piloted a fighter jet I can only take their word for it, but it was good fun. The ‘film’ ended before the centrifuge had stopped which did make me feel the spinning and left me feeling a tad dizzy. Going by the wobbly walking participants, I was not the only one this happened to.
Again, still not as much ‘g' force’ as the Mission Space ride at Epcot.
